Quote: “How I hated that world of riches, carousing and playing! How I hated myself for remaining so long in that horrible world!”(Hesse, 97)
Analysis: The refusal of return isn’t obvious in Siddartha but there are several hidden refusals. This quotes shows the realization of the world he was in and Siddhartha is filled with disgust and contempt towards it. This shows how Siddhartha wouldn’t and doesn’t want to cross back into that realm again, he is extremely hesitant to go to that depth again. This quotes uses diction we associate with loathing and anger, further expanding the reasons he would wait to return if he ever did. We see a use of exclamation marks, making the quote seem to shout inside of your head and exploding with the emotion that Siddhartha feels.
